Technical specs and decision signals

Use these specs to confirm browser fit, privacy boundaries, and the current export behavior before you remove noise.

Cost

Free, with no account and no watermark.

Privacy

Noise reduction and encoding run on your device; the file is never uploaded to ToolBuddy.

Input

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG/Opus, FLAC and WebM audio, up to 500 MB per file (100 MB on phones and tablets).

Output

MP3, WAV and FLAC on every browser; M4A, AAC and OGG where supported. Defaults match the source format and quality.

Method

Spectral subtraction with a noise profile learned from the quietest frames; presets Light, Medium and Strong, or a custom strength (0 to 100%) and noise floor (-80 to -20 dB).

Measurement

Noise floor of the source and the result, and the reduction in dB.

How to use

Check supported input/output details and follow the tool steps before exporting.

01

Select an audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC or WebM, up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets)).

02

Read the source noise floor in the Control Panel; it is measured as soon as the file loads.

03

Set the strength: higher removes more noise but can make speech sound watery.

04

Set the noise floor: raise it if noise survives, lower it if speech is affected.

05

Keep the output that matches your file, or choose MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC or OGG.

06

Select Remove noise, switch between Original and Result to compare, then download.

Why clean up audio with ToolBuddy

  • Your recording never leaves the device: the noise reduction runs in the browser.
  • Works best on steady noise such as hiss, hum, fans, air conditioning and room tone.
  • The Control Panel shows the noise floor before and after, and how many dB it dropped.
  • Compare Original and Result at the same moment in the same player.
  • Two clear settings, strength and noise floor, instead of a wall of options.
  • Free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you clean up.
๐ŸŽฏ

What people clean up with it

  • Reduce the hiss on a podcast or interview recorded with a cheap microphone.
  • Remove air-conditioning or fan noise from a voice-over.
  • Clean up a lecture or meeting recording before sharing it.
  • Reduce the hum on an old recording or a field recording.
  • Tidy a voice note recorded in a noisy room.
  • Prepare dialogue for a video before mixing it with music.

About Noise Remover

Noise RemoverRemove Background NoiseReduce Hiss

Remove background noise without uploading

Many noise removers upload your file to a server or require an account. ToolBuddy cleans the recording on your own device, inside the browser tab, and nothing is sent anywhere.

That suits interviews, client calls, unreleased tracks and private recordings. Files can be up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets), and there is nothing to install.

Made for steady noise

The noise remover learns what the background sounds like from the quietest moments of the recording, then turns each frequency down in proportion to how close it is to that background. This is spectral subtraction, a long-established signal-processing method.

It works best on noise that stays the same: hiss, hum, fans, air conditioning, computer noise and room tone. Sudden sounds, such as a door slam or a cough, change too fast to be treated as background and are mostly left alone.

Two settings, clearly explained

Strength, from 0 to 100%, sets how much of the noise is removed. Higher values clean more but can leave a watery, underwater artifact around speech. The default of 70% is a good balance for most voice recordings.

The noise floor, from -80 to -20 dB, is the level treated as background. Raise it if noise survives; lower it if quiet parts of speech are being damaged.

See the result as a number

The Control Panel measures the noise floor of your file as soon as it loads: the level of the quietest moments, where only background noise remains. After you remove the noise it measures the result too, and shows how many decibels the noise dropped.

A drop of 10 dB or more is clearly audible. If the number is small, raise the strength or the noise floor and run it again.

Compare before and after

The preview uses the same player as ToolBuddy's other audio tools: a waveform lane per channel, a level meter, frequency bars and a spectrum. Switch between Original and Result and the player stays at the same moment, so you hear the same words both ways.

The export starts in your file's own format and quality. WAV and FLAC are lossless; MP3, M4A, AAC and OGG are encoded once when you save.

When another audio tool fits better

The noise remover reduces steady background noise. It does not remove music, voices or sudden sounds, and it is not an AI model that can separate a voice from any background.

After cleaning a recording, remove the pauses with the Silence Remover, even out the level with the Audio Normalizer, or cut a section with the Audio Trimmer.

FAQ

Common questions.

Have more questions? Reach out via our contact page and we will respond within 24 hours.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. ToolBuddy reduces the noise in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the file.

What kind of noise does it remove?

Steady background noise: hiss, hum, fans, air conditioning, computer noise and room tone. Sudden sounds such as a door, a cough or a dog barking change too quickly to be treated as background.

How does it work?

It learns the noise from the quietest moments of the recording, then turns down each frequency in proportion to how close it is to that noise (spectral subtraction). It is a signal-processing method, not an AI model.

Which settings should I use?

Start with the defaults (strength 70%, noise floor -45 dB). If noise remains, raise the strength or the noise floor; if speech sounds watery or thin, lower them.

How do I know it worked?

The Control Panel shows the noise floor of the original and of the result, and the reduction in dB. Switch between Original and Result to hear the difference at the same moment.

Does it reduce audio quality?

Speech and music above the noise are kept, but strong settings can add a watery artifact. WAV and FLAC exports are lossless; compressed formats are encoded once when you save.

Which formats can I use?

Any audio your browser can decode, including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG/Opus, FLAC and WebM audio, up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets). Export MP3, WAV and FLAC on every browser, plus M4A, AAC and OGG where the browser provides those encoders.

Is the noise remover free, and does it work on phones?

Yes to both. There is no account or watermark, and it works in current mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.
