How to use

Check supported input/output details and follow the tool steps before exporting.

01

Select an audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC or WebM, up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets)).

02

Check the gaps found with the default settings; they are shaded red on the waveform and listed in the Control Panel.

03

Adjust the silence threshold, the minimum gap and the padding until the right pauses are marked.

04

Click a red gap on the waveform, or Keep in the list, to leave a pause in place.

05

Keep the output that matches your file, or choose MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC or OGG.

Why remove silence with ToolBuddy

  • Your recording never leaves the device: finding and cutting the gaps runs in the browser.
  • Every gap is shaded on the waveform before anything is cut, so there are no surprises.
  • Keep any pause with one click on the waveform or in the list.
  • Padding leaves a little audio on each side of a cut, so words are not clipped.
  • Compare the original and the result in the same player before you download.
  • Free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

About Silence Remover

Silence RemoverRemove Silence From AudioCut Dead Air

Remove silence without uploading your recording

Most silence removers upload your file and process it on a server. ToolBuddy finds and cuts the gaps on your own device, inside the browser tab, and nothing is sent anywhere.

That suits interviews, lectures, client calls and private voice notes. Files can be up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets), and there is nothing to install and no account to create.

See every gap before it is cut

As soon as the file loads, each detected pause is shaded red on the waveform and listed in the Control Panel with its start, end and length. A summary shows how many gaps will be cut, how much time that removes and how long the result will be.

Click a red region to keep that pause, and it turns grey; click it again to cut it. The list works the same way, so you can review long recordings gap by gap.

Three settings decide what counts as silence

The silence threshold sets how quiet audio must be to count as silent, from -70 to -10 dB. Raise it for recordings with background noise, lower it for clean studio audio. The minimum gap, from 0.05 to 3 seconds, leaves shorter pauses alone so natural rhythm survives.

Padding, from 0 to 0.5 seconds, keeps a little audio on each side of every cut so the first and last sounds of a word are not clipped. The markers on the waveform update as you move each slider.

Compare before you download

The preview uses the same player as ToolBuddy's other audio tools, with a waveform lane per channel, a level meter, frequency bars and a spectrum. After you remove the silence, switch between Original and Result to hear the difference.

The export starts in your file's own format and quality. The audio that remains is not changed; WAV and FLAC are lossless, and compressed formats are encoded once when you save.

Good for speech, careful with music

Silence removal works best on speech: podcasts, interviews, lectures, narration and voice notes, where pauses are clearly quieter than talking.

Music rarely has true silence, and quiet passages can fall under the threshold. For music, lower the threshold and lengthen the minimum gap, or use the Audio Trimmer to cut just the start and end.

When another audio tool fits better

The silence remover cuts quiet stretches and leaves everything else as it is. To reduce steady hiss or hum, run the Noise Remover first. To cut one section, use the Audio Trimmer.

To make several clips from one long recording, use the Podcast Clip Maker, and to even out the loudness of the finished file, use the Audio Normalizer.

FAQ

Common questions.

Have more questions? Reach out via our contact page and we will respond within 24 hours.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. ToolBuddy finds and removes the silence in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the file.

How does it decide what is silence?

Anything quieter than the silence threshold (-42 dB by default) for longer than the minimum gap (0.4 s by default) is marked. Raise the threshold if quiet pauses are being missed; lengthen the minimum gap to keep short natural pauses.

Can I keep some of the pauses?

Yes. Every gap is shaded on the waveform and listed in the Control Panel. Click a gap, or select Keep in the list, and it stays in the recording.

Will it cut off the start or end of words?

Padding (0.05 s by default) keeps a little audio on each side of every cut. Increase it if words sound clipped.

Will the cuts click or pop?

No. Every cut gets a 5 millisecond fade on each side, too short to hear as a fade but long enough to stop a click where two pieces meet.

Does it remove background noise as well?

No. It removes quiet stretches, but noise inside speech stays. Use the Noise Remover first if there is steady hiss or hum, then remove the silence.

Does removing silence reduce quality?

The audio that remains is not changed. WAV and FLAC exports are lossless; MP3, M4A, AAC and OGG are encoded once when you save, starting from your file's own format and bitrate.

Which formats can I use?

Any audio your browser can decode, including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG/Opus, FLAC and WebM audio, up to 500 MB (100 MB on phones and tablets). Export MP3, WAV and FLAC on every browser, plus M4A, AAC and OGG where the browser provides those encoders.

Is the silence remover free, and does it work on phones?

Yes to both. There is no account or watermark, and it works in current mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.
