How it works

A small portrait-matting model (MODNet) looks at every frame and marks what belongs to the person. That cut-out is placed over the background you choose.

Smoothing blends each frame's cut-out with the one before, so edges stay steady, and it starts again at a scene change.

New backgrounds

Choose a solid colour, a green screen, a blurred copy of the original background with a strength setting, your own image, or another video, which is looped if it is shorter.

You can also export just the mask, a white person on black, for other editors. Where your browser can encode transparent video, you can export a WebM whose background is transparent.

Local processing

The model is downloaded once from ToolBuddy, checked against a fixed fingerprint, and kept in your browser; the video never leaves your device.

It is slower than playing the video, so the tool measures the speed on your device and shows an estimate before you start.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The background model runs in your browser, on your device, and neither the video nor any frame leaves it.

What does it remove?

The background behind people. The model is trained on portraits, so it works best on one or a few people in clear view; objects, animals, and busy scenes are less reliable. Check the preview frame before you export.

What can replace the background?

A colour, a green screen, a blurred copy of the original background, an image, or another video of your own. You can also export just the mask, white on black, for other editors, or, where your browser can encode transparent video, a WebM with a transparent background.

Why is there a model download?

The background model (about 6 MB) is downloaded once from ToolBuddy, checked, and kept in your browser, so later videos start straight away. It is only downloaded when you agree.

Why does it take a while?

Every frame is analysed by the model and then encoded again, so it is slower than playing the video. The tool measures the speed on your device and shows an estimate before you start, and the time left while it works.

Why do edges flicker less with smoothing?

Smoothing blends each frame's cut-out with the previous one, so the edge does not jump from frame to frame; it resets on scene changes.
